Mary Magdalene Drama Shines a Holy Light on a Great Saint

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA – The new live one-woman drama “Mary Magdalene – At the Feet of Jesus” shines a holy light upon St. Mary Magdalene’s redemptive journey, her faith in Jesus, and her tenacious devotion to His teachings.  As many others walked away, Mary was among the few disciples remaining at the foot of the cross at Jesus’ crucifixion.  At the request of Jesus, she was the first to herald His resurrection to the world. ‘Apostle to the Apostles’…this is her legacy.

Performing artist Nancy Scimone, who portrays Mary Magdalene, wrote the drama after a Holy Land pilgrimage with her parish in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. The pilgrimage included a visit to the excavation of a Magdala synagogue.

“While walking among the ruins by the Sea of Galilee where Mary Magdalene and Jesus may have walked, I was inspired to create a story to honor this great saint, and to present her in a respectful and holy way.  At home, I prayed to move this inspiration forward, and reached out to one of our Deacons after his homily about St. Mary Magdalene. He graciously offered guidance as I created the script and began producing the drama.”

Based on sacred Scripture, the story emphasizes how faith, repentance, and God’s grace and mercy transform Mary Magdalene’s soul.  “In many ways we can identify with her and be inspired by her journey of faith,” says Scimone.

Although the script is set in Biblical times and includes familiar scripture such as the raising of Lazarus and the Mary Martha dinner, the story presents current messages such as good versus evil, and belief in the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The story also highlights Mary’s friendship with the Blessed Mother.

Scimone’s original songs for the drama mark turning points in the story, such as “I Will Not Walk Away,” Mary’s response to seeing ‘the multitudes turn their backs on Jesus’ at the Bread of Life Discourse (John 6.)  Although the songs are to be sung a cappella in the live performance, they are being arranged for orchestra ensemble by one of the Dominican sisters from the St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville, for a future recording.

Award-winning stage director Rob Tessier, producer/director of Upper Room Theatre Ministry at All Saints Church in Manassas, Virginia, is the director for this production.  “I am blessed to be working with Rob,” says Scimone.  “He has transformed the script from the printed page into a living, breathing drama that will keep audiences completely engaged.”

Nancy Scimone has toured to over one hundred churches and cathedrals throughout North America and in Italy with sacred music performances and with her other original one-woman drama “St. Faustina – Messenger of Mercy.”  She has performed as soloist in sacred music at the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC) the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, on the steps of the US Capitol, and in New York City at Church of Our Saviour in a concert for the Sisters of Life. She is a member of the American Society of Composers, Arrangers and Publishers (ASCAP.) Her music has aired on EWTN and other Christian radio.
